I have never been a contractor and really want to know the difference between contractor and employee and how to compare them?
Let me say, if there are two offers, one is direct employee with 85k/yr, another one is contractor with 60dollar/hr, which one shold be better.
Contract gets paid more, direct gets paid less. Contract finishes when project ends, direct maybe retained as "core" employee.
Down to the core, there is no major difference since once you are not billable you will be out. I only know a few places that have an overhead charge code that they give to direct while business slow. Also medical insurance cost maybe a big difference between contract and direct.
Oil is at $125/bbl, gas at $3.80/gal now so the boom will be here for a while. 85k/pa vs $60/hr is about 50% difference, I'd say go for the money.
Harry,
You need to start a revolution/revolt in Japan.
Currently, I was told senior piping designers with PDMS or PDS in US/UK are getting almost three digit hourly rate. But knowing pipers, there try to muddy up the water for their gains. So the truth I do not know. But when Oil is at USD$100+ a barrel, there will be a lot more energy related project in sight.
Let's hope the good time continues :-)
PS. I also had a conversation with my piper friend lately - debating on who is getting paid more now, the "pimp" or the "prostitute", and we come to a conclusion that managers are making more when they screw up projects. So here I go, being politically incorrect again.
pps. there is an email circulating in Houston among pipers that compared designer/engineer to street walkers (someone please post the email here) a while ago. Pimp: well they are the headhunters or recruiters that may get you a good job sometimes but most of them are like ... (self censored).
$60 - that is not the three digit figure I mentioned. If you change it to Sterling or Euro, then you are getting close. You are almost off by a factor of 2.
Money is not everything, but the lack of money is everything.
disclaimer, I am NOT getting paid that amound but am very tempted by the unsolicited offers I get in my email box.
[QUOTE=de_ding;20634]I did not see money being mentioned in the article.
However I did see this one, not sure which newspaper it was on.
Everyone wants the big money, not everyone can deliver what they are paid. At the first sign of weaking demand of oil/gas, the BS's will be out of the door...
Below the picture in a section called "Pay, Perks" is where the money was mentioned....
You are correct De... "Never over sale yourself"... when it comes time to tighten the money belts, there will be a wholesale house clearing.
