I'd like to hear from you if there's anyone out there that ever had to migrate from AVEVA P&ID to AVEVA Diagrams?
I have just upgraded from AVEVA P&ID 12.1 SP1 to 12.1 SP3, but SP3 is causing me a lot of headache, I'm really fed up with it, and I think I'll change to Diagrams, but I'm still doing some research and I'd like to hear from other users.
Is it actually possible to migrate to Diagrams smoothly? Thoughts?
[QUOTE=Linkman;105318]You're thinking about switching mid-project?
I personally always liked Diagrams more, but some people swore by P&ID. To me it was always a pain.
Hi Linkman,
The majority of the project is over, there's only small projects here and there now. We are now doing an as-built (back drafting) of the plant, and I have upgraded to this new version of AVEVA P&ID but it's causing nothing but headaches.
As we have a team of people doing back drafting, I thought on instead of doing it on P&ID, do it on Diagrams.
I am not an expert, but here are my limited views:
- Diagrams is a very powerful tool, however it does not come with all the symbology/rules/etc you need for a true P&ID. There is definitely a fair amount of admin work to be done.
- Diagrams is VISIO-based, while P&ID is AutoCAD-based. Whatever you currently have in AVEVA P&ID is not directly transferrable to Diagrams. Perhaps the AVEVA people have a conversion tool or something to help you make this easier.
- From a database standpoint, Diagrams writes directly to Dabacon and is much much easier to manage than P&ID, which goes around through SQL. In this sense, you would probably have a lot of work to do getting everything from P&ID into Diagrams. Heck, it might be easier to do them from scratch.
Bottomline, my suggestion... If you have the license available for Diagrams, play around with it a little. And start your next project with Diagrams... this one might be a bad idea to migrate.
Oh and, ask AVEVA! They might have guidelines for migration if you insist on it.
I'm starting to realize that migrate now is not a good idea, we would spend too much time. But I'll definitely install and play around with Diagrams, the idea of having everything on dabacon makes me very excited. Maybe I'll slowly move to Diagrams, once I have it set up.
By the way, I asked AVEVA already if there's a easy way to migrate from one to the other, the answer is no.
Here's the problems I'm having with the newest version of AVEVA P&ID SP3:
1- Synchronization with PID reports is not working anymore.
2- When manipulating some of the drawings the system freeze and crash.
3- A lot of the symbols on my library won't show up on the menu.
4- Harder to copy drawings if you want to reuse them, on the previous version all you had to do was to copy the drawings to another folder, rename it, and you were good to go.
5- The new login system doesn't work with Windows authentication properly, keep getting errors messages that users don't have access to their drawings anymore.
6- Drawings are involuntarily moved all the time to different folders on the drawings folder structure.
This is all I can remember for now, I really do not recommend using it.
