The last few companies I have worked for have required the need to convert PDS projects to PDMS with intelligence so from this requirement I have recently developed software linking the Oracle database RIS text files to the Microstation models and extracting both the PDS intelligence (line number, Instrument, SP, Equipment, pipe support tags and their descriptions) while maximising the export of true primitives without using polyhedrons for any piping models.
Although you can import Microstation models using Aveva Implant, you get no intelligence and the PDMS model is filled with polyhedron elements which badly effects the graphics performance, especially on larger projects.
The beauty of our approach is we don’t require PDS/Oracle licences or PDS report extracts to obtain the base conversion data so there’s no issue with old software versions. We simply use the archived PDS data handed over to the client on project close out (Oracle RIS dumps, spbom.l, shbom.l files and Microstation models) and we can convert any data available all the way back to the early 1990’s including obstructions for soft clash primitives such as insulation, access ways and maintenance envelopes so nothing is lost.
PDS is a dinosaur and being phased out so conversion to a future proof application like Aveva PDMS/E3D makes sense.
