OLD Bolting vs New Bolting

Hello everyone,

I'm comparing the old & new methods looking for the specific benefits that brought the new bolting method.

I found countless discussions on this topic but since it's an old subject none of the links given still work and i couldn't figure out any way to change the urls for making it work.

I easily found info on the new bolting method since documentation is still available but I struggle to find any on the old method.

Therefore I can't see what particular benefits were added with the new method.

Here's what I've gathered so far from another discussion :

- "The new bolting method allows for bolt sets that can be of different types. For instance, an 8in knife gate valve may have (4) through holes and (4) tapped holes on each side.  Within the bolt set for that valve, you can assign how each bolt point element is to act and how thick, or deep, it needs to be.  This allows for greater flexibility in the bolting of unusual elements." - Understood

"The new bolting method allows for more bolt references to be assigned to a single SCOM - I assume here we are talking about the BLRFarray - .  For instance, a flanged reducer can have a BLRF value for each of its sizes." - I missing the point here. wouldn't any other size be another SCOM ?

Maybe someone could complete my thought above ? Or has functional links to help me ?

  • For reducing flanged elements, OLD or NEW methods are both all right. I mean both methods can cope with that.

    OLD method would use MBOL elements. NEW Method: each SCOM  can point to different SBOLs through the BLRFarray.

    Another good point for NEW method is that you can "explode" aditional items (i.e. washers, nuts etc etc)

    So you have MTO for studs separated from nuts, washers etc etc.

    Another pro for NEW method is BSEL (bolt selector)

    So for a specific flanged joint you can choose an alternate bolt set.

    The old method would require adding in the piping spec that flanged element twice.

    Each SPCO poining to a different bolt set
