I think it is hard to compare because Custom Solution in most cases is the thing which represent something that does not exist in 'out-of-box' application.
And it always depends on engineer request and not just by case.
So for example if there is 'wish' of a designer to have the tool which not in ADP then there is a need to write custom application.
I think the only point that should be in mind that when customising any application please do not forget that sometimes you can have a déjà vu means 'reinvent the wheel'. So please be careful when customising something. Maybe the function you are going to do already exists
Summarising: sometimes custom application can do the things that ADP cannot. But there is no need to write something 'new-old' if it is exists.
