Always back up the XXX000 directory. Write a bat command and copy it to another directory. Ideally you will need to expunge all users and claimlist beforing doing this, but I have done it with ghost users too and you can expunge users later.
Never trust your IT to do incremental backup and restore individual files. You may run into reference number issues if individual files are restored. Especially if your Catalog database will give you dotted lines if restored the wrong version.
Winzip/Rar handy to use since it will compress file to about 1/10 of size.

Just delete the virgin databases in the old project, and set project variables for 11.5/11.6 to point to the project.

Take a backup of the project before you do this, because there is no way back once you've done it.

Have been struggling with PDMS here for a few years, alone responsible for PDMS at 5 locations. For a long time I had to all PDMS admin, development, user support and maintenance for all locations all by myself. Being responsible for PDMS in a growing firm with more than 200 PDMS designers is not always an easy task, so I always try to find out ways to make life easier for myself.
Did you by the way know that you can include project databases from older(11.2/11.3/11.5) PDMS versions into your 11.6 project without upgrading the foreign project?
That saves a lot of headache if you have your Cat&spec project in a older PDMS version, and need to use it in your current 11.6/11.5 project.

please, I have a problem with PDMS 11.6 and I don't known if it's work like this. when I work in sam project , everything is ok, the piping can be insert with show compoment creation form , I can choose the compoement until seial 300 RF , I receive one project with hight serial 10000 PSI , but when I want to insert piping by clic on show piping creation compoment , the dilog box appear but no compoment? and when I do this : creat/compoment , its working??? but by this way it's hard to choose the rite compement....please can you help me to activate the compoement by clic on show piping craetion compoment? thanks in advance
Where you placed your project? All disks for PDMS dbs need to be as NTFS not FAT32. If you use proper format check all environments for project and PDMSUI pmllib and so on.
