• OK,

Just a quick question if you will use AVEVAs MAS project as catalogue dbs in your project.

How many global HUB licenses do you have?
As the catalogue project also must be made global, you will need at least 2 global HUB licenses. I suppose you will be taking care of the cats&specs at your offcie!?

To be able to include cats&spec databases from the MAS project into your project, the MAS project must be global. This does not mean that you actually has to start any global daemons for it. When you make a project global, it will split the system DB into one local system database, and one global system database.

Before you try to make a project global, make sure that the global software has been installed.

To make a project global, log in to the admin module and write the following rows:
    LOCK
    MAKE GLOBAL
    UNLOCK

After the project has been made global you have to restart the Admin module, as the forms&menus changes a bit.

Note that you have to do this also for the MAS project if you intend to include their dbs as foreign databases into your project.
  • Harry,

Let me jump in now that I know your company is going global because of there is a business justification.

Cats/spec is always the most time consuming part of setting up PDMS.  Once you get on a real project, you will know what Aveva gave you in piping cats/spec is not enough.  It will take years to develop.

Any stuff you add in cats/specs can be used later on in your company's future work, so that is a plus.  But to get the balls rolling, you need a lot of help.  Otherwise it will be your bottleneck on a real project.

Please also see this thread[/U] about naming convention for cats/specs items.
  • So many things at one go...Kindly move a bit slow so that I could understand the concept as we move along.

Yes, at the starting phase or we are just starting so we have just decided to use AVEVAs MAS project as catalogue dbs in our project and later on we can setup any other catalogue db or let me know if you have any suggestions or personal advice.

At present we have only one global Hub License and so if you say we can ask for one more but it will take some time since you must be aware of all the procedures inside the company, anyways...we will arrange but Can we go ahead without that this time so that when I have the same I just follow up the instructions and let you know incase I get stuck somewhere.
  • Hi De,
What I feel is I have no trouble in creating cats/specs if I see a long time back just when I had just started my journey..and on the other side I have you all nice guys providing instant helping hands within fractions of time even I could never expected such kind of thing would happen before joining this platform.
Otherwise, if you still feel that will become a blockade on my way to dstination then we should just make some common project whose catalogue can be utilised and can be altered in a way as per company's requirement apart from the Aveva's Master Catalogue.
  • If you are going to use AVEVAs MAS project as a start for the cats&specs, I suggest that you copy all databases into another new PDMS project first, and leave the original MAS project untouched.

I am sorry that I did not mention this in my last post, but I was in a hurry at work, and the phone was ringing like crazy all day.

Please tell if you need help with copying the MAS project into a new project.

My opinion is that the MAS project is good to start from with your own cats&specs, but it is far from ready when it comes to real project work.

You can live with only one global HUB license for now, but when the real project work starts off with high speed, and you constantly create new cats&specs, you will definetly need another license(my personal opinion. It might be that De is able to use 1 global HUB license for 50 global projects, but I want all global projects to be running at the same time  ).
  • Hi,

Well, as you said I have copied the entire master project containing (000(db),mac,pic,iso) at some different location so that it would stay untouched and the one placed at the original location renamed as MAS instead of earlier original name MASTER.
Is it alright or you want to convey something else.

  • Actually what I was thinking about was to create a new cats&specs project for your company, and into that project copy the databases from the MAS project.
Project name HJC maybe would be a nice for the catalogue project (HarryJoe Catalogues  )
  • Hi Thomas.......so nice of you for such a great concern and kind of support you are willing to give.I am glad to know that many nice people like you are scatterred round the globe and we just need to land ourselves on such a common platform so that we could search a single out of it and bound him together.
Well, you won't believe how happy you have made me today...Oh my God ..I am jumping on my chair like a kid...just kidding......Anyways thanks for everything you have served till yet.

    bye..
