• hi.

When you speak about PDMS is "slow", which will take the blame? is it the processor or the video card?

Which will dictates its performance in pdms? Video card or processor? eg. I already had a 2gb RAm.

  • Just check the number of applications that you are using at a time. Have look at this by checking the Task Manager...it could be insufficient memory at times and at times the complexity of the command i.e. Add all and volume is large etc. and the kind of project (standalone / global) etc...
  • Both.  Is your PDMS running slow?  Can you post your computer specifications here?
  • another thing worth checking it the networking - are you using pmllib installed on your local machine, or across a network? Are you using a database on a local machine, or across the network?

I think the problem boils down to the  computer spec. Though we have sufficient RAm at 2gb.

    My specs are,

    Pentium 4  2.39ghz
    Radeon X1650 Series 512 MB.
    Single Monitor

We are not in global networking. PMLLIBs and database are in a server.

O yeah, my specs are jurassic. I read in some thread that ATI Video card dont  play well with PDMS.

Actually, I am preparing a report for our upgrades. AVEVA recommend pentium D which is a low range processor but to look at the video card are just high end. Quadro?

  • dah...

Read the Aveva published spec on their website, and use the graphic card as specified.  Quotro FX 3700 is what we use.  PDMS is a high-end application so buy workstation accordingly.

You just can put the cheapest gasoline in a Porche and expect it to perform.

    .

I know. I read them and none of our video card passed =)   My laptop spec is better than my workstation i'm using here.

*boss point of view.... porche using diesel and gasoline , both arrive on their destination.[/COLOR]

lol =)  You just made me laugh. I already submitted my report. Hope the bosses will abide with the spec given in aveva website.

With specs given on the website, so video card dictates the performance. The better the video card the better the performance. Am I right?

  • Yes your boss can also walk or ride a bicycle to get to your destination, or use a wheel chair (when we are done bashing him/her).

Some video cards just will not let you pick PDMS elements properly or have really slow response.

Sure you can tell your boss to get a drafting board and that will get the job done as well.

Your boss' thinking is still stuck in the 90s where PC/Workstation cost is high.  Now your home computer is most likely faster than the piece of junk you use at work.  Tell him that you can bring your home PC to work to save company some money.

Of course the more expensive the card, the better the performance, however there is a point of diminishing returns.  Not everyone knows how to handle a car over 150mph, so you are better off with a mid-range graphic card and not the top of the line.  Your model most likely is not that big for the card to make that much a difference.

I'll just have to let them see that its already 2009. High end yesterday, low end today.

    Thanks for the idea.

Your model most like is not that big for the card to make that much a difference.

It will surely make a differrence now. Even in recession, project is still coming, one way to cope with the situation.

    I really aprreciate your insight.

  • hi

We finally got an upgrade. I talked to our system admin and they bought the machine. PDMS is working fine and no waitings anymore. I am using PDMS 11.6 SP5.

    The specs are

    Processor: Phenom II X3 720 2.8ghz
    Videocard Quadro FX570 256 MB
    RAM 2gb
    HDD Caviar SE16 320gb 7200RPM SATA
Cooler: Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev2. Quiet Heatpipe Tower CPU cooler.

Are these good enough? We still got another batch of machine for upgrade, I can still change the specs.

    Thanks.
