PI Autopoint Sync

Can anyone explain exactly what the PI Autopoint Sync does in a PI to PI environment?

I have a server on my SCADA network, and a server on my corporate network. There are PItoPI interfaces setup to pull the PI data from SCADA to Corporate. I want any new points (Not new data, this is already done with the PItoPI) that show up on the SCADA network to be copied to my corporate network.

I thought this is what AutopointSync was supposed to do, but I can't see how it would. What it looks like is it monitors the points on the PItoPI interface and sync's up the attributes associated with the interface. So if my UOM changed on SCADA it would update to Corporate, or the descriptions. Don't get me wrong, this will also be useful.

So am I missing something obvious? Any good walkthroughs out there on configuration if I am?

  • Hi Joel,

I am new to APS, so there may be something more to consider than what your read here.

It depends on the Rules you have set in the Settings menu, Rules option.  I have chosen to not Create automatically, but instead Store in Available Points database. To use this, PIAutopointSync must "Sync" to show up my new points.  Then I can look in Available Points, right click and create them.

Do you have synchronizing on a schedule?  If not, or if you don't want to wait for the schedule, press the "Sync Now" button. (You must then close the APS window right away, or you get a database exclusively open error.)

In summary, if your points are not created automatically, it may be either the synchronization had not yet occurred, or you don't have Create Automatically configured.

    Best regards and good luck,

    Mary Bellinger

  • Joel,

You have described what APS should do pretty well and Mary Bellinger gave some great details.  You will also need the PI to PI APS Connector.  Without the connector, you won't get too far.  With PI to PI, make sure you have it configured in a push direction (PI to PI interface on the SCADA) and not on the corporate server.

  • It's working now, what I found was there are interface specific settings that must be set. I went in multiple times and made changes and clicked OK, but apparently you also have to click Apply. Once I found that, there's 1 single line in the logs and if you aren't paying attention you'll over look it, the PI points and syncs started happening.
