Equilibrium Curves and Absorption Column Optimization

1. Can Pro II generate an equilibrium curve for a light hyrdrocarbon solute in equilibrium with solute free liquid and vapor so I can manually calculate absorption tower minimum absorbant rate, maximum product gas purity, number of operating equilibrium stages, etc. at a defined pressure?

2. Can the solute free liquid and vapor consist of multiple components (i.e. a heavier hydrocarbon and inert nitrogen)?

3. Does Pro II have any Absorber/Stripper Column optimization tools?  I.e. I input the liquid and vapor streams, define the solute to be absorbed, and Pro II calculates the minimum absorbent rate, maximum purity of the product vapor, etc.

Thank you in advanced for your input and I look forward to further discussion on these topics/questions.

  • Hi Joshua,
1 - I am not sure why you want to calculate manually those parameters when you can easily leave PRO/II calculate it for you. You can set up an absorption column add the input streams and see the resulting gas purity. You can do a case study to see the effect of absorbant rate in gas purity. PRO/II does not have a way to do a case study varying the number of stages, but it is a very easy value to manually change and run again the case study of the other variables. All the results can easily be transferred to Excel where you can evaluate the results.
2 - Yes using the answer to 1 above.
3- Yes, PRO/II has an optimizer that you can set up to do that type of optimization. As long as you do not ask to also optimize the number of trays on the Absorber/Stripper.

As an example of 1 and 2 you can see the G8_Amine_Sweetening_Plant described in the Applications Briefs Manual and corresponding sample file G8_Amine_Sweetening_Plant.prz in the \Applib folder.
