Ok education and experience... I'm calling out to all admins here. It's not that I want to be an admin but what I was thinking about is the satisfaction of being an admin. And weir is right. What must admins expect as the software "grows up"?
any satisfaction will obviously depend on your personality and aptitude for the job. If you don't like helping people, solving problems or anything to do with databases then you won't enjoy being a PDMS Admin... and especially not if you aren't very good at it!
I have been at it for about 8 months now.....it's an interesting job....requiring a blend of technical ability, people skills, diplomacy and management....that along with a big sense of humour(you are definately going to need that!!)
Don't be surprised that when you do your job well and no one notices... because actually doing your job well mostly means they shouldn't.
The reward... for me at least... is getting the call...climbing in the PDMS life boat to rescue a user in distress, leading the technically challenged of "my flock" to safety. That and a couple of sacks of gold of course.
Final words.... the amount you can learn about PDMS, SQL, NAVISWORKS, VBA, etc., etc. is big.....REALLY,REALLY BIG... best to be humble 'cos you will definately be needing help...probably forever....whoever you are :)
