Moving office to new location - setup help

  • Hi Everyone,

We are currently in the process of relocating our office.....i would need ur help and guidance in setting up our existing PDMS setup to the new location...please note the following:

as our company name has changed, therefore we have to do the following:
    -  Networkwork domain name will change at new location
    -  Server names will change but we'll be taking our servers with us..only the name will change....all hardware and software remains same
    -  Workstation names will change...again only machine name will change, everything else remains the same...only users will be looged on to the new domain and all
    - PDMS versions used 11.4 sp2 & 11.6sp2 both on different servers

    Help Required
Apart from modifying the license file to change the server name....what else will be required

    1.  Anything on the workstations to be done to get everything running smoothily as before....how to point the Flexman license manager to point to the new server ??
    2.  Server setup...anything required?
    3.  Will change of domain name have any affect on PDMS setup
    4.  Also please let me know if there is anything we sud take care of before making the move

kindly let me know if you need any further information

    Thanks in advance

I really do not think you can plan too much before the move.

It should be a straight forward change.

If you have any customization that refer to your old PDMS server, you will have to modify the code - search and replace the old servername to new one will do the trick.

    1. If you flexlm server is not on your old PDMS server, you do not have do anything, just add the line 744@pdmslicensesrv to your bat file or .bat file
    2. Well, basic IT setup, disaster recovery etc, not PDMS specific,
    3. I do not think so,
    4. Before the move, bring enough food with you when going to work, make sure you kiss your wife goodbye. You will be there for a while
    5. When your preparation succeeds, do what Proverb does - give thanks to the Lord, when it did not go as planned, blame Aveva.

OK, just ignore 4 and 5.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised that it is not that big a deal.

I was able to hack my way to get a server installed, files moved in the field away from main office in less than a week.

Give yourself plenty of time so you do not back yourself in the corner.

If there are isos/drawings need going out soon, do not move the server, you just never know what may go wrong.

    Good luck!
  • Hi 786PDMS,

You are correct that when you change license server names you will need to update your license file.  However, according to the license files that we received, you may not need to ask Aveva for a new license file.  You may simply be able to change the name of the server within the file.  As long as the MAC address does not change on your license server, you should be okay.

Here is a quote from our Aveva licenses:

    #
    #NOTE:
    #  The hostname (1st arg) and optional port address (3rd arg) on the SERVER line,
    #  and the data in the user_info argument on the INCREMENT lines can be
    #  changed.
    #  Any other changes will invalidate this license.

As for additional changes, you will have modify your evars.bat file so that the license manager statement points to the correct name of the server.  For example:

    if not "%LM_LICENSE_FILE%"=="" goto lmok
    set LM_LICENSE_FILE=744@
  • If PDMS says that it cannot find the license at the new office, you might have to delete the following registry entry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\FLEXlm License Manager\CADCENTRE_LICENSE_FILE

This will be stored in the registry as soon as PDMS is started for the first time on a machine(if the users have such access rights that they can write to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE), and after that it does not matter what your environmental variable says, it will use the registry entry.
