Hello All!

Hello All!

I am new to the OSI Pi software, as I previously worked at Emerson and am very much more familiar with their historian and data collection. At my new company however, they are using Pi across their fleet.

Within my first week I was notified of an issue and was looking for some troubleshooting ideas being so new at this. At one of our remote sites, we have a combustion turbine that is utilizing a SEL 3355 as the RTU and then this transmits data to the main Pi server at a manned plant. I guess for about a year now, they have lost communication with the SEL 3355, or they can no longer see any of the Pi points. Where is a good place to start in troubleshooting this?

Thanks everyone in advance!

  • Hello Rhine,

To commence our investigation, could you please verify the status of the network connection? Additionally, it would be helpful if you could provide a concise overview of your PI system configuration.

Could you confirm if there is any ICCP software facilitating communication between your PI system and the other system?

Lastly, I would appreciate it if you could specify which PI interface you are currently utilizing.

    Best regards,

    Mohammad

  • mhbintaleb,

Thanks for the reply! I am going to be traveling to this site and checking the status of the network connection as soon as possible. Is there any tricks to checking the connection of the Pi Interface to the server, or just a simple ping from the command prompt.

Sorry if my replies back to you sounds very unintelligent, I am very new to the Pi side of things, what is the easiest way for me to provide you with system overview?

Kind of the same question for you here, I am coming into this system and there is not a lot of people here to ask for help, how can I see what, if any, ICCP is facilitating communication between the interface and server?

At the plants they are still using Pi ProcessBook with an upgrade to Pi Vision coming later this year.

    Thank you!

  • Hi RhineCody,

i agree with Mohammad that knowing what interface is being used and its placement will be really helpful. Often communication with RTU's on SEL devices is via DNP3. But the interface does not need to be on the SEL machine. Assuming the remote nodes are running Windows, you can use the Test-NetConnection (tnc) powershell (ex: >tnc <piservername or IP> -port <5450>)command to verify connectivity. The PI Server normally uses port 5450. Most interface set ups use the PI ICU (Interface Configuration Utility). You can start that on the interface node, then select the interface from the dropdown list, then run the interface interactively. On the first ICU panel, you can open PI message logs. It's a good idea to open those first, then try running the interface interactively and see what messages come up. I hope this helps.

  • Hello Kieth,

This will help a lot. Thank you for being very detailed with the instructions. I am trying to learn all of this as soon as possible and the community seems great!

Do you know of any good books or trainings that are offered? I have contacted a few places about possible training and have not heard much back.

  • i think the PI System is one of the best documented, and best supported platforms out there. For general learning topics there's a site for various ways to learn about the system (learning.osisoft.com). there is also a YouTube learning channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC333r4jIeHaY-rGgMjON54g). In the YouTube list you'll find series on administration and setting up data collection, which would seem relevant to getting started. The documentation is also all available online. Just log in to your customer support site (customers.osisoft.com) and select the interface and download the documentation. That has details on how to configure, administrate and troubleshoot the interface. From that support site you can also search on any error message or issue you're experiencing and almost always you'll find guidance on its resolution. I hope this helps.

  • , welcome!

As a new PI Admin, I'd definitely recommend you complete some of the courses in the PI Admin track on our Learning site: Administrator.

The Standard courses will give you a broad base of knowledge and skills for PI System Administration. For your more pressing need (i.e., trouble-shooting data flow issues), I'd suggest this course under the Specialized section: Troubleshooting Basics for Administrators. Note that the first exercise is highly related to what you are dealing with: Troubleshooting a Broken Tag.

The paid registration for a course includes 30-day access to a Cloud Training Environment so you can get hands on without fear of breaking things but note that the course videos and workbook are freely available (just scroll to the bottom of the course page).

Also, if you are really stuck while troubleshooting, please feel free to reach out to Tech Support for assistance.
